My First Time was drawn from the website www.myfirsttime.com, a website that invites you to share the story of, well, you know. The show offers free tickets to virgins. How do they know? The Miami New Times explains it.
Ken Davenport, the producer of AltarBoyz, developed a stage show that uses material from the site as well as contributions from the audience to create an experience as fresh as....
John Rodaz directed a cast that included Shira Abergel, Paula Barros, Jason Edelstein, and Joel Vazquez.
Christine Dolen reviewed for The Miami Herald:
With content ranging from salacious to sweet, My First Time is a hybrid of theater, comedy show and the sheer recitation of facts (names of first partners, locations where virginity bit the dust, age at first experience) from both the website posters and the audience, as theatergoers are asked to fill out a virginity-related survey before the show. At 90 minutes, My First Time feels both long and repetitive, though director John Rodaz and his cast sporadically elevate the experience with some wonderfully theatrical moments.
With the exception of Barros, who plays everything with an aren't-I-cute perkiness, the actors have the versatility to shift at warp speed from one first timer to the next.My First Time is playing Area Stage through October 16, 2010.
