The Scene for March 8, 2013

The temperature's taking another plunge as we prepare this week's offering of plays.  But the theatre scene is turning up the heat.

Two major national tours opened this week, and that's on top of the five regional theatre companies, two world renowned sketch comedy troups, two cabarets, and a handful of children's and community theatre productions.

Whew!  The critics really have their work cut out for them this week!  And so will we, trying to keep up with all of them.

Here's what's playing on The Scene this weekend:

opening...

The long-awaited Actors' Playhouse production of In The Heights opens this weekend at The Miracle Theater.  We're betting this one is going to be sold out the last couple of weeks of its run, so get your tickets now.  Read about it in The Herald.

The Maltz Jupiter Theater is opening its production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, through March 24 - expect this one to sell out quick, too. Heck, we should just say that about every show that opens there and at Dramaworks.

The Alliance Theatre Lab opens Brothers Beckett at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, through March 24.

Island City Stage opens its production of Body Awareness at Empire Stage, through April 7.

If you find yourself in Key West, The Drowsy Chaperone has just opened at The Waterfront Playhouse, through March 30.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild presents Chicago at the Willow Theater in Sugar Sands Park through March 17, 2013.

Jerry's Girls
plays at the Broward Stage Door Theatre through March 24.

Laffing Matterz is back at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; new show, new chef, new seasons of laughs.


coming and going...

Sally Struthers appears in her untitled one-woman show at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center this Friday and Saturday only.

The Second City is playing The Broward Center on March 8; it's playing at the Maltz Jupiter Theater on Sunday, March 10.

The Onion, a live performance troop from the popular satirical news site, plays Sunday at the Parker Playhouse.

If They Could See Me Now: A Broad’s Way With Broadway!
starring Missy McArdle plays March 11 at The Plaza Theatre.

The national tour of Billy Elliot opens at The Kravis Center, through March 10

The Broadway-bound national tour of Flashdance: The Musical plays at The Broward Center through March 17.  Oooh, Channel 10 has pictures! Nice.

The critically acclaimed production of A Raisin in the Sun winds up its extended run at Palm Beach Dramaworks this Sunday, March 9.

The African American Performing Arts Community Theatre
presents its production of The Amen Corner, through March 17, 2013.

Lake Worth Playhouse
offers The Foreigner through March 17. And Palm Beach ArtsPaper liked it.  You don't see many reviews of community theater productions.

Florida International University Department of Theatre
presents The Liar, through March 10.

Sugar Babies plays at the Tamarac Theatre of Performing Arts through March 10.

Fort Lauderdale Children's' Theater offers Legally Blonde, The Musical this Friday and Saturday only.

Miami City Ballet presents Wonderland this Saturday at the Arsht Center.

The Roxy Theatre Group presents Thoroughly Modern Millie through March 17.

Tarzan plays Saturdays at Showtime Boca through March 9.

Miami Theatre Center presents The Love Of Three Oranges, through March 10.

Cinderella plays at Actors' Playhouse through March 21.
