The Scene for January 6, 2012

Time flies when you're having fun; we've had a long string of great plays.  The Carbonell Awards judges have their work cut out for them. figuring out who makes the nominees list.  The awards started following the calendar year instead of the theatre season a few years back, so it's time for them to figure out who will by vying for the honors to be awarded April 2 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.  And this year, more than any other, the nomination itself is the reward.

And guess what? There's still a lot of great plays to see!

Here's the first Scene for 2012, and it's a doozy.


opening...

Infinite Abyss Productions
opens Snow White Trash at Empire Stage, through January 28, 2012.  It's a new play written by local artists Erynn Dalton & Jeffrey D. Holmes.

Palm Beach DramaWorks opens its production of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-on-the-Moon Marigolds. It plays through January 29.

GableStage opens its production of The Motherfucker with the Hat, and this is about the only place outside of Gablestage where you'll see the title spelled correctly. That motherfuckier plays through February 5, 2012.

Pulitzer finalist The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Diety starts previews at Caldwell Theatre Company this weekend, with opening night scheduled for Friday, January 13.  It runs through February 12, 2012.  Read about its link to professional wrestling here.


you still haven't missed...

The Prisoner of Second Avenue plays at the Broward Stage Door Theatre through January 29, 2012.

If you find yourself down by Key West, check out August: Osage County at The Waterfront Playhouse.  Through January 14.

Laffing Matterz plays the Broward Center's Abdo New River Room, for its third season of dinner and comedy.


last chance to see...

Mad Cat Theatre,s production of Macbeth and the Monster at The Light Box at the Goldman Warehouse winds up its run on January 8, 2012.

The Stage Door Theatre production of Irving Berlin's I Love A Piano closes this Sunday, January 8.


passing through...

Soul Doctor: Journey of a Rock-Star Rabbi plays at The Colony Theater in Miami Beach through January 8. The production moves to Fort Lauderdale's Parker Playhouse the following week, where it will play through January 29.


for kids...

Showtime Dance & Performing Arts Theatre presents The Prince of Egypt through January 14, 2012.
