2009-2010 South Florida Theatre Season

While there's actually theatre all 52 weeks of the year in South Florida, the traditional theatre season coincides more or less with tourist season. More or less; even "The Season" doesn't mean as much as it once did in South Florida; Palm Beach still sees a seasonal fluctuation in population, but Fort Lauderdale and Miami simply range from "overcrowded" to "really overcrowded."

"The Season" starts with a trickle of Quebec license plates, and roars into full swing following Thanksgiving, with a crescendo up to Spring Break. And then it starts to get easier to find a parking spot at the Mall, and soon it only takes three cycles to get through a traffic light at rush hour.

But through it all, the show goes on.

  3. Wow! Thanks so much! Finally, I have a reason to enjoy living in South FL! This is an AMAZING lineup, we're not usually that lucky. And I've been seeing South FL shows for 12 years.

  4. Hey Chris. This the latest reply to a post in history.
On January 13th 2008 you wrote a blog
-Coconut Grove Playhouse has a plan - FINALLY
and while that story has long played itself out, I came accross a line that struck me...
"Who does that leave? Barry University? Does Barry even HAVE a theater department anymore?"
As the guy whose job it has been to help resuge Barry's department from it's down years (along with my colleague Hugh Murphy) I just thought you would be interested in knowing that Barry now has a thriving and talented young department. We have 29 majors and another dozen minors, produce 3 to 4 shows a year, including a student directed one-act festival, bring guest artists and playwrights to campus to do about 5workshops a year and take groups of students to about 7 professional productions.

This monday at 7:30 october 5th, in the beautiful Gato art Gallery, Barry University will be hosting a special event honoring playwright Michael Mckeever. Hope you can make it and see for yourself what is happeneing at barry.
The event is free and will consist of reading of 4 short plays (including a world premier reading)-mail me with any questions-jmanzelli@mail.barry.edu

  5. Hi, John-
I've emailed you a response. I'm glad to hear that Barry's putting some effort into its theatre department. It was once a cornerstone of the local theatre scene, and hopefully you'll bring it back to something like its former prominence.
