The Scene for January 4, 2013

It's a new year, which puts us smack dab in the middle of the theatre season here in South Florida; and what a season it's been!  From all the tiny companies sharing the postage-stamp sized Empire Stage, to regional powerhouses like Actors' Playhouse and Maltz Jupiter theater,  to our three major performing arts center, we've been able to see nationally prominent productions of world-class plays.

And while we've had a lot of great shows so far this season, there are even more great shows to come - it's a great time to be a theatre-lover in South Florida.

Here's what's playing on The Scene this first weekend of 2013:

opening...

The Interview opens at The Women's Theatre Project, through January 20.

Mad Cat Theatre Company opens Christina Wong's Cat Lady at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse.

Island City Stage presents Pig Tale through February 2 at Empire Stage.

Broward Stage Door's production of The World Goes 'Round plays through January 28, 2012.

If you find yourself in Key West between now and January 12, check out The 39 Steps at The Waterfront Playhouse.

Laffing Matterz is back at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; new show, new chef, new seasons of laughs.


coming and going...

Mary Poppins blows through the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts this weekend.

Forbidden Broadway plays at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center this Friday and Saturday.


last chance to see...

The critically acclaimed production of A Delicate Balance winds up at Palm Beach Dramaworks through January 6, 2013.

Kravis Center for the Performing Arts has settled with the stagehands' union, so Jersey Boys is now playing through January 6. Expect very full houses due to the shows canceled during the strike.


for kids...

Miami Children's Theatre presents The Little Mermaid Jr. through December 30.

The Wizard of Oz plays at the Showtime Performing Arts Theater through January 12.
