The Scene for April 3, 2009

Wow. April at last. Not much in the way of 'April Showers' yet, but it's early. It is starting to get warm and humid, so it's pleasant to walk into a nice cool theatre to see a play.

Just a reminder: Clicking on a highlighted show title leads you to the review summaries for that show.

openings

Rising Action Theatre opens The Andrews Brothers on April 3.

"Three men who were rejected from the miliary due to minor health ailments have been serving as stagehands on USO tours, yet each yearns to be onstage. During a gig at a South Pacific Army base, the trio finagles their way into a guest spot in a revue starring the Andrews Sisters, featuring songstress Peggy Jones. When the sisters cancel their appearance, our trusty three don wigs, make up and heels to carry on in "the show must go on" fashion."

The Edge Theatre opens I Take Your Hand in Mine on Friday. It's described as "a moving play based on the love letters of Anton Checkhov and his actress wife, Olga Knipper." It seems they don't have a website, so go to the Theatre League website for information.

It's time for Theatre Prom! Monday is the 33rd Annual Carbonell Awards, the one day when you get representatives from all the theatres (except Florida Stage) in one place. The Awards Ceremony has been trimmed in all sorts of ways - the ticket price has been slashed by more than half (to $25), a smaller band onstage, the MC will be MIA, and overall we're confident that we'll get through the ceremony with enough time to take full advantage of the after-party just a few blocks away at Revolution Live.
